About

We moved to the British Virgin Islands at the end of 2010 for a better life for ourselves and our kids - James, Georgie & William. The BVI is not exactly 'off-the-grid' living but kind of island-suburbia with 4 X 4's and no shops. We also sail a lot and had to learn how to read hurricane radars.

The past few years has been fast and furious with much hard work, quite a bit of rum and lots of laughter and some tears along the way.  I kept a journal-blog to stay in touch with far-flung family and friends called  Joining the Dots as we turned ourselves inside-out to become many things we wern't previously:  housewives, sailors, car mechanics, hedge fund consultants and very patient (although we're still working on that one).

At the end of 2012 we opened an artisanal bakery called Family Food & Bakery (read about it here,  here and here) where we bake good bread and a growing selection of cakes, savouries and pastries.  The bakery is tiny with an even smaller shop attached, but we have big plans for the future and we are thrilled by the level of support we have received.

When we are not baking bread, we can usually be found driving from one end of the island to the other ensuring that our children are having their idyllic childhood, which we often have to remind ourselves is the reason we moved back here.  Sometimes this point is lost on us when we battle endless missing shoes, large concrete trucks and the island habit of stopping at any time whilst driving, to chat to neighbours.

When not baking or in the car, then we'll most definetly be lugging endless washing baskets up and down the stairs of our Carrot Bay house, on which domestic war is constantly waged but usually lost.  Luckily we have a domestic crusader known as the Saint of Jamaica who bravely rides up our very steep hill on her white horse, to excellent effect.

This new, improved and sleeker version of my blog (which in no way reflects the state of our lives) gives me the ability to spend even more time writing - which I love to do. Since the old blog was starting to look like a fan page for Optimist sailing, I was dying to share more of what we were eating and making. We rarely watch television and can only read newspapers online, so we do have longer evenings than most.

Our bakery Family Food & Bakery can be found on Wickhams Cay II, Road Town, Tortola and you can email us at familybakery@surfbvi.com
